Why Radon Testing Matters in Richmond and Central Virginia

Central Virginia’s geology makes radon more common than many people expect. Across the Richmond region and surrounding counties, many homes and workplaces exceed the EPA’s recommended action level.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that emits from the ground. It can be found in household items, such as stone features and granite countertops. Further, radon can be released from water into the air during showering or doing laundry.

At normal levels, radon is not a cause for alarm.

But radon can become trapped and build up quickly. Long-term exposure at elevated levels increases health risks, which is why national health and environmental agencies recommend proactive testing every 18-28 months..

The only way to know your radon level is with regular, certified testing to ensure accuracy.

Hi, I'm April Leslie, the Founder of RVA Radon.

In 2016, I became a certified radon measurement specialist. But radon testing is about much more than a career to me.

My motivation is my family. With a family history and other lung issues, respiratory awareness has always been a priority in my family.

My mother, who is a non-smoker, developed additional respiratory problems and eventually had a portion of her lungs removed.

This led to a quest to learn more about the root of our family's lung issues.  I discovered the health dangers of elevated radon levels, particularly for non-smokers.

My mission became to educate others about the dangers of elevated radon levels and to serve my community with trustworthy radon testing, and RVA Radon was born.

FAQs

  • What certifications does RVA Radon hold?

RVA Radon holds NRPP Radon Measurement Professional certification, the industry’s leading credential for radon testing. This certification requires ongoing training, adherence to ANSI/AARST protocols, and demonstrated expertise in radon science, testing procedures, device operation, and reporting.

  • How long does radon testing take?

It depends on several factors. We will give you an accurate estimation after we evaluate the structure. Typically testing ranges from 2-4 days in residential structures but varies for each home.

Commercial structures vary significantly based on the size of the unit or units being measured, depending on building conditions.

  • Is radon a problem in Central Virginia?

Yes. Many buildings across Central Virginia test above the EPA’s recommended action level, making routine testing an important part of maintaining indoor air quality.

  • Do commercial buildings need radon testing?

Radon can enter any type of structure — not just homes. Offices, schools, and commercial spaces benefit from testing to ensure a safe indoor environment.
