Radon Testing for Richmond, VA
Radon testing services for residential homes, commercial buildings, construction homes, and real estate transactions throughout Richmond, Virginia and the surrounding areas.
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers worldwide.
It's estimated that radon exposure is related to 21,000 cases of lung cancer each year in the United States.
700 of those cases are attributed to residents in Virginia each year.
The first way to protect against elevated levels is to perform a radon measurement.
To put it into perspective, this graphic compares the effects on the lungs from different levels of radon exposure, chest X-rays, and smoking.
When radon levels in your home or building reach 4.0 pCi/L, it is equivalent to smoking 8 cigarettes per day or receiving 200 chest X-rays per year.
The EPA strongly recommends fixing any home or building with any of the radon levels listed.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need radon testing?
Not to be dramatic ... but radon testing can literally save the lives of your loved ones (including your pets).
Radon occurs naturally, so we breathe it in every day. As you inhale, radon particles are deposited in the lungs.
Non-elevated levels are not an immediate health risk. However, if radon becomes trapped and builds up, elevated levels become a significant health risk.
The ONLY way to know your radon levels is to test for them.
If my neighbor's house has low radon levels, shouldn't my home have low levels, too?
No, unfortunately, every home and building is subject to its own particular radon level based on the building structure.
How does radon get into my house?
Radon is a natural gas that enters homes and buildings through cracks in the foundation, gaps in the wall or floors, and even through the water supply.
Why is radon testing important for homes and businesses in the greater Richmond area?
There are several factors that influence higher radon level measurements in the RVA area, in both rural and urban areas.
One is the high concentration of uranium/radium that naturally occurs in the soil and underlying rocks.
In addition, due to its proximity to the James River, historical structures, and home to many local mines, the radon levels around the Richmond area tend to be elevated.
